I find it pretty difficult to keep up with any sort of daily activity.
Sunday Serendipity
The weather outside is frightful, but I want to avoid the usual internet distractions.
A while ago I signed up for the Vmail newsletter. This is from VOLE.wtf and seems to be put together from stuff submitted by anyone!
One of the items was Wilderness Land a map of links generated from a google spreadsheet which leads to many rabbit hole sites.
Here are a few:
- Radio Garden a globe full of radio stations from around the world.
- Library of Colors Another site for serendipity, arranged around colour words from page titles.
- Pasta Guide Nice an simple site, lots of information without adverts and other distractions.
- corpora/data/words at master · dariusk/corpora found via the Library of Colors, lotf of useful looking lists of words.
- 🛰️ See A Satellite Tonight, probably not tonight here given the weather we are having.

Another favourite source of daily serendipity is the dailywebthing daily pointers.
A website where you can pay your dues to the pug in a rug, by honoring it with your eyes. - The website https://puginarug.com - The code https://github.com/tholman/puginarug
Pretty delightful video showing how the The Pug In A Rug Site/page was made. Simple enough for me to learn from.
I usually do not use YouTube videos for learning preferring text or text and image. This video hit the sweet spot for me.
It also felt like Tim was working it out as he went along, developing ideas and fixing mistakes.
Read: The Burgess Boys by Elizabeth Strout
★★★☆☆ 📚
Found this a bit less satisfactory that Olive Kitteridge, which I adored. The boys have a sister & a fair bit of family tension. A lot going on, immigrants, New York & Maine, differences in class…

WordPress logon redirect
I’ve had to search for this one several times so putting it here so that it might make it stick or be easier to find.
Sometimes working with my pupils I want to send them to a blog, have them logged on but not go to the dashboard.
the login url has a redirect_to parameter.
So I I use a url like
blog-address/wp-login.php?redirect_to=page-I-want-the-pupil-to-go-to
Where blog-address is the blog I want them to log on to and page-I-want-the-pupil-to-go-to is a relative or full url
I often share notes to my class via AirDrop and hide long urls but typing a name, selecting it and making it a link, ⌘-k on mac. Unfortunalty you have to create linked text in another app on iOs and paste it in.
Must take better notes.
When I see something I like, or think will be useful, I do one of several things:
– Know I’ll remember
– Add it to pinboard
– Send it to drafts
– Post to my blog
– Favourite it with in ever system I am in.
Yet again this has failed me.
The most positive piece of news. All power to Jack Monroe for drawing attention to a terrible situation & getting it fixed.
