Mostly, sometime the image is the thing, it is carefully created or curated. I do dislike them more on web pages I’ve gone to to look for information.
Can we all agree that giant per-post image headers look terrible on most blogs? It’s been a curse of default WP themes past few years, too. We need it to be easier to have posts without image headers and even without titles.
@johnjohnston See also the all too meaningless image headers on Substack, Medium, etc.
@gregmoore @johnjohnston When I moved all my posts from Medium, I took pleasure in removing all the barely relevant images I had previously added brcause the conventional wisdom was that you needed graphics to make the posts eye-catching.
@artkavanagh I think medium is a place to find the worst offenders;-)
But one of my favourite bloggers always uses them, carefully chosen or more often created, so there are exceptions.
@johnjohnston Oh, there are certainly exceptions, and some excellent photos and illustrations are used in blogs. But Medium posts tend to look unfinished without a header picture so it always felt as if there was pressure to find a vaguely suitable image, and it was always an afterthought.
