I guess a teachers job is to encourage participation for all learners.<\/p>\n<p>We have to\u00a0think if software companies are the best people to curate our information.<\/p>\n<p>A While back I turned off the setting in twitter to show me the &#8216;best tweets&#8217; first. Have idealistic dreams of community built on aggregation of open content<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 john johnston (@johnjohnston) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/johnjohnston\/status\/766955422343368705\">August 20, 2016<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t really do Facebook <a id=\"fnr1-2016-08-21\" href=\"#fn1-2016-08-21\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a> but it is even\u00a0further\u00a0done the\u00a0algorithmic path.<\/p>\n<p>I presume the\u00a0algorithms will be designed with the end goal of getting more ad views, not for what is &#8216;best&#8217; for the user or community. They may also have negative effects on a learning community see: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.researchinlearningtechnology.net\/index.php\/rlt\/article\/view\/29927\">Participant association and emergent curriculum in a MOOC: can the community be the curriculum? | Bell | Research in Learning Technology<\/a>, which I&#8217;ve read too quickly a couple of times now.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t suppose there is much to do about this in the short term other than turning off settings when we can. Longer term it might be wise to think about the <a href=\"https:\/\/indieweb.org\/\">IndieWeb<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Featured Image: A screenshot&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>PS.
