{"id":17510,"date":"2023-01-06T11:34:14","date_gmt":"2023-01-06T11:34:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/johnjohnston.info\/blog\/?p=17510"},"modified":"2025-12-06T20:38:35","modified_gmt":"2025-12-06T20:38:35","slug":"chatgpt-for-lazy-teachers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/johnjohnston.info\/blog\/chatgpt-for-lazy-teachers\/","title":{"rendered":"ChatGPT for Lazy Teachers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve read a bit about ChatGPT use in education, there is a lot about <a id=\"fnr1-2023-01-06\" href=\"#fn1-2023-01-06\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been kicking the tyres of <a href=\"https:\/\/chat.openai.com\/chat\">ChatGPT<\/a> a little. Even on the surface it is quite interesting.<\/p>\n<p>I have tried a couple of things that might be useful. One is to get some JavaScript functions for a little fun. It <a title=\"tdc4007\" href=\"https:\/\/johnjohnston.info\/blog\/tdc4007\/\">did what I wanted<\/a>. The other was perhaps more pertinent to teaching.<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to knock out a couple of simple cloze procedures, making up sentences is one of the more tedious tasks so I though I&#8217;d give ChatGPT a shot. I asked:<\/p>\n<pre><strong>Me<\/strong>: can you give me sentences for 10 year old using each of these words feat\nfeet\nmail\nmale\nleak\nleek\nmeat\nmeet\n\n<strong>ChatGPT<\/strong>: Sure! Here are some sentences using each of these words:\n\n\"I am so proud of my little sister's feat of climbing to the top of the jungle gym all by herself!\"\n\"I can't believe how big my feet have gotten since I was a baby.\"\n\"I need to go to the post office to mail this letter to my pen pal in France.\"\n\"My uncle is a male doctor.\"\n\"There's a small leak in the roof that needs to be fixed before it starts raining.\"\n\"I love adding sliced leek to my salads for a little extra flavor.\"\n\"I can't wait to have a barbecue and cook some juicy meat on the grill.\"\n\"I have to go meet my friend at the library in an hour.\"<\/pre>\n<p>So I needed to fix the spelling of <em>flavor<\/em> and asked, with typo, \u00a0as in the screenshot, \u00a0for another sentence for male. I got a list. I needed to adjust the one I chose to make the lion lazy too.<\/p>\n<p>It was easy enough to paste that into an H5P Fill in the Blanks Content and get a <a title=\"Homophones 1 Cloze \u2013 Banton Buzz\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/nl\/bantonbuzz\/portfolio\/homophones-1-cloze\/\">cloze in Glow Blogs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/nl\/bantonbuzz\/wp-admin\/admin-ajax.php?action=h5p_embed&amp;id=137\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"> <\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3>Diversion to Other Geeky Territory<\/h3>\n<p>The Fill in the missing blanks content in H5P takes text with the words you want to be blank surrounded by asterisks. Since I&#8217;d copied the sentences into a text editor to replace the quotations, I set the document format to markdown, selected the words and pressed \u2318-i.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/johnjohnston.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/markdown_text_edit_italic.gif\" alt=\"Markdown Text Edit Italic animation\" width=\"420\" height=\"238\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I then wondered if I could get ChatGPT to add the asterisks for me, so I asked: <em> with an asterisk before and after each word<\/em>. This it did, but as it typed then it seems that ChatGPT uses markdown, so as it typed the closing astrisk the enclosed word became italic.
