{"id":125,"date":"2011-12-24T15:09:00","date_gmt":"2011-12-24T15:09:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/2237@johnjohnston.info\/blog\/"},"modified":"2012-05-20T18:53:40","modified_gmt":"2012-05-20T18:53:40","slug":"joining-ds106","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/johnjohnston.info\/106\/joining-ds106\/","title":{"rendered":"Joining DS106"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"width:205px;float:right;text-align:center;margin:4px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" onclick=\"swapjim();return false;\" id=\"jimgroom\" src=\"https:\/\/johnjohnston.info\/blog\/images\/2011-12\/2011-12-24_jim_groom_bw.gif\" alt=\"Jim Groom bw\" height=\"203\" width=\"203\"><br  \/><a href=\"#\" onclick=\"swapjim();return false;\">toggle color<\/a><\/div>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been reading Jim Groom&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/bavatuesdays.com\/\">bavatuesdays<\/a> for a few years and though it following <a href=\"http:\/\/ds106.us\/\">ds106<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Digital Storytelling (also affectionately known as ds106) is an open, online course that happens at various times throughout the year.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> DS106 is pretty off the wall, but I&#8217;ve been inspired by it several times:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/johnjohnston.info\/blog\/?e=2221\">Radio Edutalk<\/a> offshoot of EDUtalk follows the tech in DS106 Radio<\/li>\n<li>Playing with animated gifs and <a href=\"http:\/\/some-site.com\/\">automating their creation<\/a><\/li>\n<li>And the, yet to work, <a href=\"http:\/\/johnjohnston.info\/blog\/?t=piratebox\" title=\"John's World Wide Wall Display\">TeachMeet pirate box<\/a> was inspired by on of next sessions ds106 instructor Alan Levine&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/cogdogblog.com\/storybox\/\">StoryBox<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It has occasionally crossed my mind to join in with the course, but the time involved and the creative focus made me reluctant. However I do feel there is a lot to be learnt and some fun to be had by following the course so I started thinking about it. I popped a question in the <a href=\"http:\/\/bavatuesdays.com\/ds106-were-open-and-youre-invited\/\" title=\"ds106: We&#8217;re open and you&#8217;re invited! | bavatuesdays\">comment box on Jim&#8217;s blog<\/a> about using <a href=\"http:\/\/pivotx.net\/\" title=\"PivotX - The Powerful Open Source Blog CMS\">pivotx<\/a>, this blogs software instead of the more usual wordpress. Jim got back very quickly and set <a href=\"http:\/\/ds106.us\/members\/johnjohnston\/profile\/public\/\" title=\"Members\">me up with an account on ds106<\/a> which makes the decision about joining in over;-) <\/p>\n<p>I am a wee bit nervous about jumping into something that requires visual creativity. While I am happy enough editing images, audio and video I am not good at visual thinking or design  (many webpages attest to this) I do hope to have some fun around the edges. I am encouraged by Jim&#8217;s <strong>do what you like and leave the rest<\/strong> and welcoming attitude.
