GLITCHaCHROME DS106 Glitch-Gifs

chrometrees

I am not sure what week it is in the Headless 13 season of DS106!
After moaning about google plus, I’ve used it more than any other way of keeping hold of the ds106 tale. I still do not like the locked in nature of plus, but have to admit is it easy to use.

There have been lots of interesting paths developing as riff in ds106, I got interested in Mariana Funes’ glitching and watch the first wee bit of a video that Christina Hendricks posted about glitching.

There are a lot of tutorials and explanations about glitching online, but I just messed about with the easiest way, this involves opening an image with a text editor and making some random changes.

I got quickly fed-up with the length of time it took to do this and though I could make a SuperCard project to automate the process, allow me to quickly create glitches, I then though it might be interesting to create some gifs from the glitches and added that to the project.

At the same time I was paying attention to Rochelle Lockridge’s GIFAChrome Camera. Rochelle was making some lovely careful gifs and wrapping them in a ‘custom film’. I decided to borrow the frame for my horrible careless gif changing GIFAChrome to GLITCHaCHROME.

iconI added the GLITCHaCHROME to the SuperCard project which has resulted in the Simple Glitch application.
The application is pretty simple, it should run on Mac OSX 10.6.8 or later, mostly tested on 10.9.
There are no real instructions in the application but it should be obvious how it works. I consider this version 0.4 beta, but have no real plans for further development unless I get another idea.

simple glitch download If you give it a try I’d be interested in how you get on.

Update: 29.11.13 now at version 0.4.1 Beta which fixes a bug for 10.6.8 thanks Rochelle

  1. Drat! I still can’t get it to work. Thanks John for trying to make it work for me. I really should just upgrade my OS and get over with it. This is reminiscent of the hassle we went through with our GarageBand apps out of sync. When I upgraded, all problems went away.

I haven’t done it yet because I’m worried that I might loose some of my software, and have to reload it. I’m used to the mess of work I have to go through reloading software when they upgrade my PC at work.
I’ll run down what I’ve done and seen and maybe we can debug it together.

I downloaded version 0.4beta onto my desktop and opened the zip folder from there. The icon is on my desktop (Love the new icon by the way.) and now I get error codes when I try to use it. I am trying to use a small jpeg to a glitched jpeg. Before I randomly had images glitch or not glitch. No pattern that I could discern.

SuperTalk Error Number 37 – out of memory try closing some windows

I closed everything and even restarted my computer to see if that would help. Nope.

Sometimes I get a SuperTalk Error 2 as well.

I think this looks like lots of fun and I have a definite project in mind that I want to use it on. Hopefully we can squash this bug one way or the other.

    Thanks again for trying.

  2. Geez, I am a bad dog for waiting so long to play with the app! It’s much easier than trying to guess at editing the raw file in a text editor. Kudos for creating such a tool, and then rolling un the GIFaChrome template.

I never thought I would see a SuperCard app running on my computer, its been a looooooong time.

Question0 what difference does it make for the “Format to glitch” I did jpeg, and then qtif (the latter seemed to do more lateral translations)

  3. Hi Alan, Thanks.
The app doesn’t really do much, just lets you glitch faster, and pick the good ones. If I spent some time reading up a bit it could probably be a lot better, if you can get a better glitch;-)
The format to Glitch popup set the format of the image that is glitched.
Say you are trying to glitch a jpg but choose bmp as the format, the image is converted into bmp data before it is glitched.
Some formats seem to glitch ‘better’ than others, bmp, tif, qtif and tga seem to work best for me. png , gif and photoshop don’t work at all. Depends on images too.
SuperCard I find a very handy thing indeed. Gives a gui and a bit of logic to do lots of quick and dirty text and file manipulation.

  4. and as one of the early testers of this sophisticated app in the ‘we code economy’ John Johnston Enterprise, I can vouch for John’s humility. Much effort has gone into polishing the backward compatibility of the app and with the addition of the Glitchachrome frame it is a winner. 5 stars. It also makes any mac dock look the part with the great DS106 logo. #gifachrome

  5. i’m having a great time using this. not getting a a whole lot of glitches out of it, using jpegs, but love how easy it is. using it with already glitched images too.
